Step 1 · Sort your debts

Tick what you owe. Sorted ranks them.

UK debts are not equal — some have powers that go beyond your bank balance. Tick every debt you currently have, in either column. Sorted instantly ranks them in the order to pay using the StepChange + Citizens Advice protocol.

Watch out for paid debt management companies. Many UK companies charge 17-50% of your monthly payment as a fee. They offer the same DMP that StepChange or PayPlan will set up free. Never pay upfront fees. If a company contacts you out of the blue offering "debt help" or "consolidation", it is almost always a paid service.
If you genuinely can't repay

Four UK statutory fresh-start routes.

When the maths doesn't work, the UK has four statutory routes. Don't decide alone — always discuss with a free charity above first.

1. Debt Management Plan (DMP) — informal, voluntary

Affordable monthly payments via StepChange, PayPlan or Citizens Advice. Free. Not binding — creditors can refuse, but most accept. Best for repayable debt over time.

Credit impact: defaults 6 yrs on file.

2. Debt Relief Order (DRO) — for low debt + low assets

Statutory write-off after 12 months. From 28 June 2024: debts under £50,000, assets under £2,000 (excl car under £4,000), surplus income under £75/month. Fee abolished from 6 April 2024 — now £0. Only via Approved Intermediary.

Credit impact: on file 6 yrs. Cannot get credit over £500 without disclosure during 12 months.

3. Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) — 5-6 yrs binding

Formal agreement via Insolvency Practitioner. Pay affordable amount 5-6 yrs; rest written off. Binding once 75% by value vote yes. Watch: IP fees can be £5,000+ taken from your payment. Best if you have home equity to protect.

Credit impact: 6 yrs on file. Public register on Gazette.

4. Bankruptcy — last resort, £680 fee

Statutory write-off after 12 months. Apply online via gov.uk. Trustee can sell assets including home equity. Cannot hold company director role during.

Credit impact: 6 yrs on file. Public Gazette.

Scotland differences: Sequestration replaces bankruptcy. Minimal Asset Process (MAP) replaces DRO for debts under £25,000, no assets over £1,000, £50 fee. Citizens Advice Scotland or StepChange Scotland for specifics.

The honest note

SortedUK is not an FCA-authorised debt management firm. We cannot manage your debts, take payments or set up a DMP. We point you to FCA-regulated charities that do this for free.

The figures in the money-finder are typical UK 2025/26 averages or max awards. Your actual eligibility depends on assessment (DWP, HMRC, your council, your water company). Run the relevant tool for a personalised check.

If you spot an error, email corrections@sorteduk.uk. Every fix is published at /corrections with date and source.
