Help with bills in the UK

Most households pay more than they need to, not through carelessness but because the reductions are separate, unadvertised and have to be claimed. Here is where the money usually is.

Council Tax

Often the largest single saving. Council Tax Reduction is claimed from your council and is not added automatically when you claim Universal Credit. Separate discounts exist for living alone, for disability adaptations, for full-time students and — widely missed — for severe mental impairment, which can be backdated. It is also worth checking whether your band is wrong.

Energy and water

The Warm Home Discount, Cold Weather Payments and supplier hardship funds all exist and all have to be applied for. Water companies run social tariffs that can halve a bill for eligible households. Energy bill help lists the routes.

Broadband and phone

Social tariffs are available from most major providers for people on Universal Credit, Pension Credit and some other benefits, often at less than half the standard price. Providers rarely advertise them — you have to ask.
