SortedUK Open Data project
The open UK consumer-help dataset.
Last verified 5 Jun 2026 · Source 4 JSON feeds at /data/* + CC-BY 4.0 + quarterly verification
Every UK benefit rate, statute reference, ombudsman contact, time limit, regulator URL Sorted cites — published as open structured data anyone can verify, fork or cite. Updated quarterly + on every UK rule change. Sourced to GOV.UK, HMRC, DWP, NHS, FCA, FOS, Ofcom, Ofgem, Ofwat, ICO. CC-BY 4.0 licence.
Why open data is the moat
Become the canonical source.
Most platforms hoard data to lock in users. SortedUK does the opposite: we publish the structured UK consumer-help data we maintain — every benefit rate, every statute reference, every ombudsman, every time limit — under CC-BY licence. Anyone can use it. Anyone can fork it. Anyone can cite it.
The counter-intuitive moat: by giving it away, we become THE source other tools must attribute to. Wikipedia + Companies House + OpenStreetMap built defensibility through openness, not secrecy. Once academics, journalists, councils + competitors all cite SortedUK Open Data as the canonical UK consumer-help dataset, no AI can replace it without 3 years of UK expert curation.
This is the v315 commitment to defensibility. The data lives in public + grows manually + every entry has a date + source. AI alone cannot fake what 1,000 hours of UK rule-tracking has accumulated.

Licence + how to use
CC-BY 4.0: use it anywhere — academic papers, journalism, council reports, competitor products. Just credit "Source: SortedUK Open Data, sorteduk.uk/dataset" + the verified date.
Machine-readable JSON feeds (CC-BY 4.0) are already published at sorteduk.uk/data/. A mirrored GitHub repo at github.com/sorteduk/open-data is on the roadmap.
Why open data defends Sorted.
It's counter-intuitive — but publishing the data makes us harder to displace, not easier. Three reasons:
Citation = permanent attribution
Every academic, journalist, council + competitor that uses SortedUK Open Data cites us as the source. Within 24 months we're the canonical UK reference, like Companies House or OpenStreetMap.
Manual maintenance can't be faked
This dataset requires 1,000+ hours of UK rule-tracking + verification + corrections. AI alone can't produce it. Any competitor would need years to build their own + would still cite ours as the comparison baseline.
Open data attracts contributors
UK researchers + journalists + councils + advisers will report errors + suggest additions. Their contributions strengthen the dataset for everyone — particularly Sorted's own tools.
Counter-AI defensibility
The CEO test asks: "why can't another AI build this in a month?" Answer: because the verified-by-paragraph + dated + corrections-logged dataset is accumulated UK-specific work no AI can fake. Publishing it doesn't dilute the moat — it proves the moat.
What this commits us to: quarterly verification of every entry + within 7 days of any UK rule change + every correction logged at
/corrections. If we ever stop maintaining this for 60 days, that's a public signal you should look elsewhere.
The dataset's value lives or dies on the discipline of keeping it current.
Use it. Cite it. Improve it.
The dataset is yours under CC-BY 4.0. Use it in your research, in your council brief, in your competitor product. Email data@sorteduk.uk with corrections or additions. We publish + verify within 7 days.
