Frequently Asked Questions
Does a letter from HMRC mean I owe money?
No. Many HMRC letters are notifications — a changed tax code, an updated record, or a refund you are owed. Read the letter for a reference number, an amount and a deadline before assuming the worst.
What is a P800?
A P800 is a tax calculation showing HMRC thinks you paid too much or too little tax in a tax year. If you overpaid you are usually due a refund; if you underpaid, HMRC normally collects it by changing your tax code.
How do I know if an HMRC text or email is real?
HMRC does not ask for bank details or personal information by text or email, and does not threaten arrest. If a message pressures you to act within minutes, that urgency is itself the warning sign. Go to GOV.UK directly rather than using any link in the message.
Should I pay a company to claim my tax refund?
You do not need to. Claiming direct through your Personal Tax Account is free. Refund firms typically keep a large share, and some ask you to sign a deed of assignment that can route future refunds to them as well.
What if I cannot pay what HMRC says I owe?
Contact HMRC before the deadline and ask about Time to Pay. Arrangements are common and the position is much better if you make contact rather than waiting for enforcement.
