SortedUK FAQ

Straight answers about the free UK life assistant that helps you understand letters, benefits, bills and everyday British life admin — sourced to GOV.UK, with no login needed.

Is SortedUK free to use?
Yes. SortedUK is completely free — there's no charge, no subscription and no login needed to use the tools. Some features let you save things to your device, but that's optional and still free.
Is SortedUK a government service?
No. SortedUK is an independent UK guidance platform. It isn't GOV.UK and isn't run by or affiliated with the DWP, HMRC, the NHS or any council. It explains official information in plain English and links you to the official source so you can act with confidence.
Is SortedUK a law firm or a regulated financial adviser?
No. SortedUK isn't a law firm and isn't authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. It gives general guidance and plain-English explanations — not legal or financial advice — and points you to regulated organisations like Citizens Advice or StepChange where specialist help is needed.
What can SortedUK actually help me with?
It helps you understand and act on everyday UK life admin: decode a confusing letter from HMRC, a council or the DWP, find money you may be owed (benefits, grants, refunds and discounts), check whether a message is a scam, and find free local help near you.
Where does SortedUK's information come from?
Guidance is sourced to official UK bodies including GOV.UK, HMRC, the DWP, the NHS, Ofcom and dozens of other official organisations, with figures kept current. Where a scheme is run locally, SortedUK points you to your own council.
Do I need to create an account or log in?
No. You can use the tools without an account or login. An optional area called My Sorted lets you save results, deadlines and documents to keep track of them, but it's never required.
Is my information safe and private?
SortedUK is designed to keep things private. Nothing you enter is stored unless you choose to save it, and you don't have to hand over personal details to get an answer. Always follow the official body's own guidance before sending sensitive documents anywhere.
Does SortedUK decide whether I qualify for a benefit?
No. SortedUK helps you understand what you may be entitled to and how to claim it, but the final decision on any benefit, grant or refund rests with the relevant body — the DWP, HMRC or your council. Estimates are a guide, not a guarantee.
Which parts of the UK does SortedUK cover?
The whole UK — England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland — flagging where the rules or scheme names differ between nations.
Can SortedUK help in an emergency?
SortedUK can point you to urgent help and free helplines, but it isn't an emergency service. If someone is in immediate danger, always call 999.
